Pearl Street Diner
Tyler spends quite a lot of time at the Pearl Street Diner. It was the last place that he talked with his brother Michael and he goes there to write to him in his journal.
The Pearl Street Diner is a friendly, classic diner with a retro 50s / 60s feel to it. Located in New York City’s financial district, the diner serves breakfast, lunch and dinner to Wall Street types, visitors and locals.
Operating for 55 years, some of the favorites on the menu include the cheeseburger supreme with curly fries, chocolate chip pancakes, Western omelets, Cordon Bleu Grill Panini and, of course, fresh coffee.

Noguchi Red Cube Sculpture
The Noguchi Red Cube sculpture which stands behind Tyler as he says he's near Charles' office is a stone's throw away from where the twin towers stood. Noguchi said the cube, on its side, was like the roll of a dice: chance.
The cube is surrounded on three sides by skyscrapers which draws the eye upward. The cube also contributes to this effect by being placed on one of it's corners. It stands out from the surrounding, first, of course is that it is a bright red, second because it's lines run diagonally while the surrounding buildings are horizontal and vertical and finally because of while the skyscrapers appear very solid, the cube is balanced precipitously on one corner.

New York University
New York University (NYU) is where Tyler, Ally and Aidan attended college. While Ally and Aidan were registered as full students, Tyler was just auditing classes until he could decide where he wanted to go in life.
Founded in 1831, NYI is one of the largest private universities in the United Sates. Modeled after the University of London, the first trustees of the school wanted to set up a university that admitted young men based on merit and not on political or social standing. Turned down for funds by the city and state for funds, they raised the $100,000 needed to start the school privately. NYU held it's first classes in rented rooms in the Clinton Hall in 1832 and opened it's first professional school, The School of Law in 1835.
Today, NYU consists of 18 schools, colleges and institutions and the main campuses are located in six centers around Manhattan and Brooklyn with other centers sprinkled across the world. Over 43,000 students are currently enrolled at NYU in one capacity or another.

Strand Bookstore
Tyler's place of employment, the Strand Bookstore has been in business for over 83 years.
In 1927, Ben Bass opened the first Strand Bookstore on 4th Avenue. In 1956, Ben’s son Fred took over management of the store and moved it to its current location at the corner of Broadway and 12th Avenue. Originally a retail space of 4,000 square feet, it has now expanded to 55,000 square feet.
A book lover’s paradise, the Strand is said to have 18 miles of books. In addition to an extremely varied selection of used books, the Strand carries thousands of new books, books ordered directly from the publisher, and one of New York’s largest collections of art books.
The Strand also carries the largest collection of rare books in New York City. This includes books that are first and signed editions. There are also hard to find books in a variety of subjects.
